How to Properly Choose the Right Drop Out Fuse?
Voltage Rating
The voltage rating of the drop out fuse must match the operating voltage of the circuit being protected. In high-voltage distribution systems, common voltage levels are 10kV, 15kV, and 35kV. If the voltage rating is too low, the fuse may not withstand the normal operating voltage, leading to equipment damage. On the other hand, choosing a fuse with an unnecessarily high voltage rating increases costs without providing additional benefits.
Rated Current
Rated current is another important parameter when selecting a drop out fuse. The fuse’s rated current must be able to handle the normal operating current but should blow quickly in case of a short circuit or overload to protect the circuit and equipment. Typically, the fuse’s rated current should be slightly higher than the normal operating current of the circuit.
Interrupting Capacity
The interrupting capacity is the maximum short-circuit current the drop out fuse can safely interrupt. This capacity must be equal to or greater than the system’s maximum short-circuit current. If the interrupting capacity is too low, the fuse may fail to safely cut off the current during a short circuit, causing equipment damage and safety risks.
Operating Environment
Drop out fuses are typically used outdoors, so environmental factors like temperature, humidity, pollution levels, and altitude must be considered. Different climate conditions can affect the performance and lifespan of the fuse. In harsh environments, such as high humidity or salt fog areas, moisture-resistant and corrosion-resistant fuses may be required.
Insulation Level
