1. What Is Fuse Link?

Fuse link also known as heater fuse link and ordinary fuse link. It refers to a protective device that blows and disconnects the circuit with the heat generated by the product (thermal fuse link storage heater) after the current exceeds the specified value for a long enough time.

Fuse link usually refers to the ceramic fuse link. The ceramic fuse link is composed of fuse tube and fuse holder. The fuse link is the part of the fuse assembly that is actually responsible for breaking the fault current.

The fuse link is generally composed of contact board, fuse tube, quartz, fuse element, cover, link fuse, and other parts. Support part is a general name for the parts in the fuse that play the role of support and installation. Electrical fuse link is usually used together with fuse link cartridge (carrier fuse link), fuse link holder, fuse fusible link box, etc.

It is also very convenient to use fuse link holder, fuse link cartridge (carrier fuse link), fuse hande, and open link fuse.

Fuse links voltage are rated by high voltage fuse links, medium voltage fuse links, lower voltage fuse links. GRL company mainly produces lv hrc fuse link, GRL company has 30+ years of experience in fuse link manufacturer.

2. What Certificates Does GRL Have?

The protection capacity and breaking range of Fuse links are usually expressed by two alphabet:

The first alphabet is usually a lowercase “a” or “g”. “a” means that the fuse link can only protect short-circuit current, and does not have the ability to respond quickly when overloaded. This fuse is called a partial protection fuse link,

which was also called a backup fuse; “g” indicates that the The fuse can provide reliable protection in short circuit and overload, this fuse is called full range protection fuse link.

The second alphabet is uppercase. Common ones are “G”, “L”, “S”, “R”, “M”, etc. The meanings are as follows:

“G” means general-purpose fuse. The breaking speed of this type of fuse is at a general level. It is suitable for overcurrent protection of most equipment other than semiconductor equipment, such as cables, ordinary circuits and motors. These fuses were also called For “L” fuse;

“M” means a fuse for motor protection. The performance of this type of fuse is similar to that of “G” or “R” fuse, but it has an internal structure specially designed for motor protection and can withstand the mechanical load generated by the motor when it is working;

“R” means Fast fuse link. The action time of this type of fuse is extremely short, and it is a type for the protection needs of semiconductor equipment with poor overcurrent tolerance. This type of fuse is also often called semiconductor protecting fuse. links or semiconductor fuses;

“S” also means fast fuse. The “S” fuse has basically the same characteristics as the “R” fuse, but it has lower power loss and is more energy-saving and environmentally friendly.

“D” means (delay time fuse link), this type of fuse is also called slow fuse, its breaking speed is relatively slow, which makes it suitable for circuits with large surges at the moment of switching, in such circuits among them, other types of fuses are easily blown under the action of surges and cause malfunctions, while time-delay fuses can provide reliable protection for long-term overload while avoiding the impact of surges.

Combining the codes indicating the type of category and the range of breaking, common combinations are gG fuse links, gM fuse links, aM fuse links, gN fuse links, gD fuse links, aR fuse links, gI fuse links.

Type Application Application Range
gG Universal Type: Primary Conductor Protection full range

4. How To Choose The Right Fuse?

Both electrical and electronic equipment require some type of protection, usually from a fuse. Unlike circuit breakers, fuses are one-time protection and must be replaced after serving their purpose.

Generally speaking, the voltage rating of fuses is the voltage they can control, the speed of interruption and their size. The following factors should be considered when selecting fuses for a given system:

  • Normal working current
  • Working voltage
  • Ambient temperature
  • Inrush current
  • Maximum fault current
  • The length of time the fuse must be open
  • Maximum allowable I 2 t

There are a number of variables to consider when choosing the amperage of a fuse for a specific application. This will include normal operating current, any inrush or regular pulse current, desired turn-on performance and ambient temperature. GRL recommends the following:

  • When the current in the power distribution field is greater than 63A, AC NH Series Fusesare more suitable.
  • Fuses in the field of industrial control generally play the role of protecting branches, so RT18 Series Fuseswith low current are recommended.
  • Communication cabinets in the communication field are generally used in DC80V circuits, and DC80V NH00 Series Fuselinks are recommended.
  • The voltages commonly used in the field of new energy are DC1000V and DC1500V. DNPVF1 Seriesfuse Link is recommended for use in combiner boxes, and NHX series is recommended for use in inverter centralized control boxes.

For other applications, please feel free to consult us.

5. What Are The Sizes Of GRL Fuse Link?

GRL manufactures two types of fuses, NH series and cylindrical series.

NH fuse has NH00 (NT00), NH1 (NT1), NH2 (NT2) and NH3 (NT3).

The Cylindrical Fuse Link has 10mm*38mm, 10mm*85mm, 14mm*51mm, 22mm*58mm.

6. Why Choose Copper Co Ntacts Instead Of Brass Contacts?

The circuit breaker in the fuse box has a plastic case with metal parts inside. The metals used in the electrical contacts can be palladium, palladium alloys, silver, silver alloys, silver graphite, silver tungsten and base metals or electroplated base metals. Spring materials can be copper, beryllium, copper alloys, nickel, stainless steel and steel.

These metals can be plated with gold, nickel, silver, tin or other metals. The metal used will depend on where the electrical contact is used or how much load it has to carry.

Electrical contacts need to be resistant to oxidation and have high electrical conductivity. Copper conducts electricity better than brass. Using copper contacts, the temperature rise of the product will be lower, and the risk of use is smaller.

7. How To Test A Fuse Link?

The test method is very easy. The detection method of heater fuse link and neutral link fuse is the same with a multimeter.

There are two method, heating method and electric current method.

At first, it is switch the multimeter to the voltage gear position, (switch from AC to AC, DC to DC), first detect the voltage of the top pipe heads on the two fuses,it should be normal data. (square pipe fuse links with knife contacts), after detect the voltage of bottom pile head of two fuses (square pipe fuse links with knife contacts) , if it can not test any voltage from the bottm pile head,  it can be concluded that the fuse is broken.

You can unplug the two fuse links, move the multimeter to the ohm position, and use multimeter to touch the two ends of the fuse link to detect which fuse link is burned out. When the multimeter responds to the fuse link with resistance data, it means that this fuse link is good. The no data one is the burnt fuse links.

8. Difference Between Fuse And Fusible Resistor

Fusible resistors break like fuses when its current exceeded than rated data.

The fusible resistors element is usually a nichrome material, which has a melting temperature of about 1,400°C. Nichrome has a low thermal coefficient of resistance, which allows the resistor to have a stable resistance over the entire temperature range.

Under overcurrent conditions, the melting temperature of 1,400°C heats the surrounding components and PCB.

Fuses are usually copper or silver elements material and their melting temperature is usually between 962°C and 1,083°C.

Fuses also have a high thermal coefficient of resistance, at least ten times higher than nichrome fusible resistors. Therefore, under overcurrent conditions, the temperature of the fuse will rise faster than fusible resistor.

The rise in fuse resistance causes the fuse to reach its melting point faster. The fuse will prevent the heat build-up that occurs when the fusible resistor experiences an overcurrent condition. The higher heat generated by fusible resistors can damage other components and potentially cause nearby combustible components to catch fire.

The main advantage of fusible resistors is that their resistance limits surge current. A fusible resistor as the main overcurrent element in a power supply or charger with resistance up to 10Ω. In contrast, the resistance of fuses can vary from milliohms to hundreds of milliohms. Designers can combine fuses with NTC thermistors to prevent overcurrent and limit inrush current. The resistance of an NTC thermistor can initially be as high as 10 or 20Ω; however, in steady state operation, it drops into the range of tens of milliohms.

Fusible resistors appear to save space compared to separate fuses and thermistors; however, the heat generated by fusible resistors may force components to be kept at least half an inch from fusible resistors rated up to 10 W 1 inch away from fusible resistors rated over 10 W. The component spacing associated with fusible resistors can be problematic when chargers and power supplies must be installed in tight spaces.

9. What Is Different Between Fuse Link Vs Fuse?

Fuse link and fuse are only different in application fields and description methods. They are all fuse links, and they have different meanings according to different usage environments.

10. Who Are The Professional Fuse Links Suppliers In The International Market?

11. What Is The Amp Or Amp Rating?

Ampere or amp rating is the current rating of a particular fuse.

The current rating of a fuse determines the allowable current that the fuse can carry without opening under specified test conditions.

Each fuse is marked with its current rating. This grade can be identified by numbers, letters or color-coded markings.

Marking codes can be found on each product’s data sheet.

12. Can A Fusible Link Be Replaced With A Fuse?

Many users are concerned about this problem. The fuse is mainly used for short-circuit protection of electrical equipment.

As long as the rated voltage and current are properly selected, the fusible link can be replaced with a fuse.

  • When replacing a fusible link, the rated current and rated voltage level of the fuse cannot be enlarged or reduced.
  • Only replace the fuse linK with the same capacity and voltage level as the original. Otherwise, the protective effect of the link fuse will be lost.
  • The rated current of the fusible link must be matched with the fuse

13. Where Is A Fuse Link Located?

Fuse link is named as fuse link cartridge, fuse fusible link box or db link fuse holder.

The fuse should generally be installed vertically.  Please ensure both the melt and the contacts are in good contact, the fuse knife and holder are contacted well.

One fuse link control one phase. When Assemble the fuse link on fuse switch or fuse holder. Please make sure you have installed the fuse link in right position, or the fuse link could not work.

15. The Principles Of Fuse Selection Help You How To Choose Right Fuse Link

  • First when we choose fuse link ,we should determine the fuse type according to the application, as there are various fuse links, different application the fuse links are different.Such as AC 500V /AC690V gg fuse link, DC 1000V and DC 1500V Fuse Link, Cylinderical fuse link and NH Fuse Link, etc.
  • When choose the specification of the fuse link, The first and most important  step is confirm  the rated current of the melt ,and then select  the fuse link model no. according to the rated current of the melt.
  • Fuse link is used to be as a protective component in power system, in case the objects be burned out or damaged when power system is overloadedt or shorted current  caused.  So we should know the object’s overloading performance and specification very well, so that to pick up a right type and right model of fuse link .
  • In power distribution system, fuses at different  levels should be matched with each other very well. Generally, the rated current of the upper  main melt is 2 to 3 times larger than the rated current of the branch melt.
  • In additional, There are special  ar fuse link protect  motor when shorted current caused,  When you choose a fuse link for a motor, please pay hig attention on the influence of the Motor’s starting current. The fuse link  is generally only used as the short-circuit protection of the motor,     If you want  overload protection, then choose thermal relay instead of fuse.
  • No matter which type of fuse link or which application,The rated current of the fuse  should not be less than the rated current of the fuse melt; the rated breaking capacity should be greater than the maximum short-circuit current that may occur in the circuit.

16. What Is The Difference Between Breaking Rating And Breaking Capacity?

Breaking capacity and breaking rating are often used interchangeably. A fuse must be able to safely open a circuit under short-circuit conditions without damaging its surroundings.

The breaking rating of a protective device is the maximum available current at which the device can safely open without rupture at the rated voltage.

The breaking rating of the fuse must be equal to or greater than the available short-circuit current of the circuit.

17. Do You Know What’s The Difference Between Fuse Link And Circuit Breaker?

The fuse link’s  breaking capacity is high,so  in power supply accident, it burn out to protect other components, but it cannot be restored after being blown.

The circuit breaker can be restored after tripping, but breaker’s protection function can not compare with fuse link.

18. How To Choose Fuse Link For Transformer, Electric Furnace, And Lighting?

1) For load of transformer, furnace, and lighting, the rated current of fuse links should be slightly higher or equal to the load current.

2) For transmission and distribution lines, the rated current of the fuse element is slightly higher or equal to the safe current of the line

3) When it is used as short-circuit protection in the motor circuit, the rated current of the fuse should be selected considering the starting conditions of the motor and the starting time of the motor.

For motors with a short start-up time, the rated current of the fuse can be determined by referring to the following formula: IN melt = IST/(1.6~2)

The rated current of the fuse at the main busbar powered by multiple motors can be calculated with reference to the following formula:Tn=(2.0~2.5)Tmemax+TMe

(4) The installation must be reliable, so as to avoid poor contact of any phase, then open circuit of one phase, resulting in the electric body being burnt due to open phase operation.

(5) When installing a fuse with a blown indicator, the indicator should be installed in a position where it is easy to observe.

(6) The connection at both ends of the fuse should be connected reliably. The screws should be tightened well.

(7) The installation position of the fuse should be easy to replaced.

(8) When installing the screw fuse, the terminal of the bottom terminal board of the fuse should be installed in the L square well to connect with the power wire. The terminal connected to the metal threaded shell should be installed below and connected to the electrical equipment. The paint mark is outward, and the distance between the two fuses should leave a space for hand twisting, and it should not be too close. In this way, when the fuse is replaced, the threaded housing will not be charged, thus ensuring personal safety.

19. Where Is A Fuse Link Located On A Stove?

The circuit fuse for the fireplace, which is usually located on the motherboard. It’s a fuse tube that looks like a light bulb. The length is about 2 cm. This is a one-time consumable and it should be replaced if damaged.

20. What Is Thermal Fuse Link Or Heater Fuse Link?

Thermal fuse link is also known as over-temperature fuse, thermal fuse, etc. The text symbol in the circuit diagram is Ft. Graphic Symbol is shown in the figure.

It conforms to international standard IEC60269. Thermal fuse is a non-resettable one-time protection electrical element, which is connected in series to the power input terminals of various electrical appliances, and its function is to protect against overheating. When the household appliances in use have abnormal temperature, or the temperature rises too high due to the failure of temperature control, the thermal fuse link will disconnects the circuit quickly.

Types of thermal fuse link: 1. Compound thermal fuse link; 2. 3. Low melting point alloy thermal fuse link; Compound type thermal fuse link. It is widely used in overheating protection of industrial appliances, household appliances, power tools, micro motors, small transformers and lighting appliances.

21. Why Is The Main Switch In Front Of The Fuse?

The fuse is placed behind the main switch to prevent the failure of other circuits from affecting the safety of the entire circuit.

22. There Are 2 Reasons For The Fuse To Blow:

Short circuit: There is a short circuit fault on the circuit, and the fuse is quickly blown;

Overload: The load current exceeds the rated current of the fuse, it will be heat and blown fuse for a long time (generally it is 1.1 times rated current and blown in about 1 hour)

Pulse: When the circuit is started or the power supply is unstable, an instantaneous high current will cause the fuse to be disconnected. In addition, the fuse will be blown if the screw is not tightened well when the fuse is installed, or the fuse is damaged.

There is a difference between current short-circuit and current overload: The reason for the current short circuit is because the direct connection between the live wire and the neutral wire, the circuit does not pass through the electrical appliance, and it rapidly generate an almost unobstructed current loop.

A large current passes through the fuse, the resistance of the fuse suddenly increases and it generate heat energy, so that the fuse is instantly blown.

23. The Role Of Fuse-Type Isolating Switch?

Which position of the switch should be connected in series when the fuse protects the lamp?

It should be strung on the back end of the switch! That is, the switch follow the light, and then a fuse follow switch.
